Chrissy woke to the smell of cooking meat. Her stomach grumbled at her. Her nest of furs was so soft and warm, Oberon’s woodsy scent wrapped around her.

Oberon.

Chrissy opened her eyes and spotted his large bulk sitting by the fire. He was staring at the flames, his eyes glazed over. She looked around at the cave, and she suddenly had every cautionary tale pop into her head at once.

You did always say you wanted to get kidnapped by the fae, she thought hazily. Hashtag manifest bitch.

She wasn't afraid in the slightest. He could be grumpy and pig-headed, but Oberon wouldn't hurt her.

"Where are we?" she asked.

Oberon turned, and his relief shone so brightly on his face that her heart yearned for him. "We are safe in one of my dens. A blizzard hit, and I needed to get you somewhere warm to wait it out. How are you feeling?"

"I'm okay. I don't…" Chrissy couldn't remember falling asleep. The last thing she remembered was him angrily walking away. She tucked her knees up to her chest. "What did you mean by you are too old for this? What did I do wrong?"

Oberon sighed and moved to sit by her. Her hands wanted to touch him, but she didn't dare.

"You didn't do anything wrong. It's the opposite actually. You are too perfect."

Chrissy snorted. "I've never been accused of that before."

"To me, you are. I…" Oberon stopped and looked at his hands awkwardly. "I'm old, even to the fae. I thought being smitten with a woman was something that I'd never feel again. I'm in my twilight, and me wanting you has put me off balance. You're so young. Why would you want to be with someone as old as me?"

Chrissy couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Would you like the list in any kind of order? Because I can do that. Stop grinning. I'm serious."

She reached out and placed a hand on Oberon's forearm.

"I couldn't give a flying fuck how old you are. Attraction, chemistry, whatever you want to call it, doesn't care about age. I don't either. You have flustered me since you walked into Kian's hall. I don't fluster over anyone."

Oberon raised a brow. "And that's a good thing?"

"Yeah, I think so." Chrissy was feeling flustered right that second, gods help her. "I don't think you are in your twilight either. You are tied so closely to the land in both worlds. It's been out of balance, which means you have been too. Perhaps you should give the worlds and yourself a chance to recover, hmm?"

Oberon stared at her, his eyes glowing with intensity. Gods, when he looked at her like that, she didn't know if she should run away or towards him.

"I'm not modern," he said, stating the obvious. "That overprotective fae male thing, as you call it, is a part of me. I'm possessive. I don't like people touching my things, and I would consider you mine."

"I don't think those are exclusively fae traits, Oberon. I wouldn't like anyone touching you either, and I can handle the rest.
